The first thing that one must realize is that this particular type of infection is not just limited to women as so many people think.  In fact just about anyone no matter their age or gender can be susceptible to getting a yeast infection at any time in their lives. 

It is very normal for all of us to have an amount of the yeast fungus in our body which is known as Candida and which causes us no problems.  However, if changes take place in a person’s body this may provide the yeast fungus with an opportunity to grow and this is when problems can arise.

Most people generally associate yeast infections with women because most of the fungus is to be found in the vaginal area of the body.  So the chances of a woman suffering from a yeast infection compared to a man are very much increased.  When the yeast does begin to grow unregulated then this will begin to cause discomfort and irritation to a woman in this part of her body.

The excess yeast actually causes her vulva to become inflamed and this causes it to become swollen and tender.  The irritation that a woman feels results in them suffering from an itching and burning sensation which can very often become far worse when they are urinating.  Plus the first sign often to clearly show that a woman has a yeast infection is that an abnormal discharge appears from their vagina.

Generally when the yeast levels are okay the discharge a woman’s vagina is clear and odorless.  But when they do have an infection in this part of the body the discharge alters it becomes a thickish white or yellow one and has a similar texture to that of cottage cheese.  Also there may be an odor to it as well but this may differ from one woman to the next but will seem to be similar to that of yeast.

Most often women can now use over the counter yeast treatments which can help them to eliminate the symptoms, but these don’t actually deal with the underlying cause of the infection.  However, there are some over the counter treatments which one can use today that contain not only a topical cream for treating the irritating symptoms but also an oral medication (tablet) that one needs to take to help stop further growth of the yeast within the body. 

Certainly today when it comes to treating yeast infections along with over the counter and prescribed medications for treating it there are plenty of natural remedies available as well.  A quick search online and you will be amazed at the number of different types of natural yeast treatments one can try.  But before you do it is important that you seek medical advice first to make sure that what you suspect may be a yeast infection in fact is and what the underlying cause of it is.
